NVWG trumps trivia
A team from the Nambucca Valley Writers Group took on the trivia challenge at the Talarm Hall Trivia Night on Saturday 19 March and came out the victors.
An underhanded attempt at sabotage was made by another team who handed in a fake 'NVWG' answer sheet after one of the rounds with all of the answers wrong. The team of saboteurs was quickly uncovered when 2 answer sheets showed up for that round.
This only made the writers more determined to thrash the competition and a definite thrashing was had. At the end of the night, the other teams quickly declared that NVWG was banned from all future trivia nights. Sore losers!

'Dexter' author Jeff Lindsay
On a recent trip to Sydney, Diane and Jen attended a Q&A with Jeff Lindsay, author of the Dexter novels at Shearer's Bookshop, Leichhardt. It was a fascinating evening! A full description can be found on the Shearer's Bookshop blog.
Linda Jaivin Writing Workshop
On the weekend of 5 & 6 February, NVWG was fortunate to host a writing workshop with Linda Jaivin as tutor. This was organised through the fabulous Northern Rivers Writers Centre.
Linda took us through all aspects of writing fiction from idea to story structure to developing a character, show don't tell, dialogue and finally editing. She added to our writers' toolbox and gave us all an imaginary friend (our character) to take home with us.
It was a fun and totally inspiring weekend!

Life Stories at Camp Creative
Carrolline Rhodes launched her new book 'Life Stories at Camp Creative' in January 2011, at (you guessed it) Camp Creative, Bellingen. Carrolline has been teaching 'Writing Life Stories' at the annual creative gathering for a number of years, and has used this experience, her own writing knowledge and stories of some of her students to produce this guide to writing your own life story. If you are interested in writing memoir, buy this book.
Launch of 'Tribe'
Nambucca Valley Writers Group held a Writers Brunch on November 21 to launch their latest publication: 'Tribe'
'Tribe' includes short stories, flash fiction, poetry, collage poetry, and whimsical and original Denise Delaney cartoons.
At the brunch, several members read their stories or monologues to the audience along with musical interludes. The launch was very well-attended and everyone had a great time.

The Empty Chair
Inspired by the annual 'empty chair' fundraising for PEN at Byron Bay Writers Festival, Gill Chapman came up with the idea of NVWG holding an ongoing fundraiser for contributions to Sydney PEN. We have a miniature chair to represent the Empty Chair and members are encouraged to donate loose change each month to the money box, which has been painted by Denise Delaney and includes the inscription 'Words Will Set Us Free". NVWG is throwing out the challenge to other writer's groups to fundraise in a similar way and assist writers around the world who have been persecuted for their work. For more information, visit Sydney PEN.

It covers Ralph Lillford's two years as a conscripted soldier serving in the Suez Canal Zone during the early 1950s. Ralph is an artist who has a collection of some fifty drawings produced during that time and they are now archived in the National Army Museum in London. They will be reproduced in Rosemary's book.
